Liverpool’s transfer fee demands proved too much for Granada, meaning Tiago Ilori is stuck at the club for another season.

No sooner had word of Granada’s interest in Tiago Ilori surfaced in Spain than it was being shot down in England. Such is life on transfer deadline day. And, if true, it appears that Ilori’s last best chance of seeing significant playing time this season has gone.

Granada were considering three centre halves to strengthen their side before the close of the window, but with a budget of only around €3.5M to bring one in and Liverpool demanding significantly more than that for the 23-year-old, the Spanish club instead tried to negotiate a loan.

According to club-connected journalists Paul Joyce and Dominic King, though, Liverpool weren’t interested. They wanted a permanent transfer or nothing for the Sporting CP product who arrived on Merseyside in 2013 in a £7M deal but has since failed to make a case for first team minutes.

He was one of four players on the chopping block on deadline day, along with Mario Balotelli, Mamadou Sakho, and Lazar Markovic. And it now appears that only Balotelli stands a good chance of completing a move away from the club today.
